About me

Hello

I am Brian Quinn – an urbanist, human geographer and self-employed built environment researcher and consultant. I have worked for some 16 years in the built environment sector in the UK at a national level for CABE and the Design Council. Prior to this I worked as a management consultant in the UK and internationally.

My built environment career has been primarily in research, design advocacy, developing and refining tools to support and promote design quality, and best practice dissemination. This has included commissioning research, delivering enabling programmes and writing, editing and producing publications and content for the web. Also I have managed design review panels at Design Council for local authorities in London and for national bodies such as Tideway Tunnel and Highways England.

My work to date has given me a very wide perspective across local government, national agencies and Government Departments. I have enjoyed particularly developing relationships with professionals and organisations outside of the traditional design professions. I have found it is incredibly important to work constructively at the boundaries of the design sector with others, who are undertaking roles that have a huge impact on how our built environment is configured and how it is managed.

Subject areas that I have worked on include housing, public space and street design, crime prevention and counter terrorism and community led design processes in different contexts.

I am now pursuing and undertaking work in a number of areas, including supporting web content and publication production for clients needing help with editing and proofreading. Separately I am exploring research and advocacy projects in the built environment, building on my CABE Space and Design Council experience particularly. I have a longer term interest in developing work in long term evaluation of built environment schemes and projects.

I hold UK and Irish citizenship. I am free to work anywhere within the European Union and the United Kingdom.
